Reagan: Hip To Be Square

The first Republican candidate I ever voted for was Ronald Reagan in 1980. But I don’t mean to imply that I was voting for Democrats prior to that. I wasn’t. Actually, I used to consistently vote for independent and third party candidates, usually ones that were pretty much out of the political mainstream.

I did vote for George McGovern in 1972, though. Hey, what did I know? I was just a college freshman, smoking dope, and cultivating my surly, post-adolescent anti-social posture in hope of becoming a reputable member of the baby-boomer counter culture movement.

I can’t say for sure that I even liked McGovern. On the other hand, I knew I didn’t like Nixon. He stood for traditional America. I thought traditional America sucked. Nixon was like some grouchy high school principal who wanted to bust my parties and make me turn down my Frank Zappa music.
